Tunisia Tourism

In recent years, Tunisia has become a coveted destination for travelers seeking a unique and authentic experience. With its rich history, diverse culture, and stunning landscapes, this North African gem has a lot to offer. While many tourists flock to popular destinations such as Tunis, Carthage, and Sousse, there are plenty of hidden gems waiting to be discovered by the more adventurous traveler.

One of the hidden cities in Tunisia that often goes unnoticed by tourists is Kairouan. Known as the "City of 50 Mosques," Kairouan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the holiest cities in Islam. Its labyrinthine medina, with its narrow alleyways and bustling souks, is a feast for the senses. Visitors can also explore the Great Mosque of Kairouan, one of the oldest and most important mosques in North Africa, as well as the Aghlabid Basins, a series of ancient water reservoirs that once supplied the city with water.

For those looking to escape the crowds and explore Tunisia's natural beauty, the town of Matmata is a must-visit. Nestled in the heart of the Berber region, Matmata is famous for its unique underground dwellings, known as troglodyte houses, which were featured in the Star Wars films. Visitors can stay in one of these cave-like dwellings and experience traditional Berber hospitality firsthand. Matmata is also home to stunning lunar landscapes and ancient olive groves, making it a paradise for nature lovers.

For the more adventurous traveler, a Sahara adventure is a once-in-a-lifetime experience not to be missed. The vast desert expanses of southern Tunisia offer a range of activities, from camel treks and 4x4 excursions to camping under the stars. The desert town of Tozeur is the perfect base for exploring the Sahara, with its palm-fringed oases, ancient ksour (fortified villages), and traditional Berber festivals. For a truly immersive experience, visitors can stay in a traditional Bedouin tent and learn about the desert's flora and fauna from local guides.

No visit to Tunisia would be complete without sampling the country's delicious traditional cuisine. Tunisian cuisine is a blend of Mediterranean, Arabic, and Berber influences, resulting in a unique and flavorful culinary experience. Some must-try dishes include couscous, a staple food made from semolina grains and served with a variety of meats and vegetables; brik, a deep-fried pastry filled with egg, tuna, and parsley; and shakshouka, a spicy tomato and egg stew. For dessert, don't miss out on trying maakouda, a potato fritter coated in sesame seeds and honey.

In addition to its natural beauty and delicious cuisine, Tunisia is also home to a rich cultural heritage that can be seen in its many historical sites. The ancient city of Dougga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa and offers a fascinating glimpse into Tunisia's past. Visitors can explore the city's well-preserved temples, theaters, and baths, as well as its impressive mausoleums and triumphal arches.

Overall, Tunisia is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by intrepid travelers looking for a unique and authentic experience. From its hidden cities and stunning landscapes to its delicious cuisine and rich culture, Tunisia offers something for everyone. So why not step off the beaten path and explore this hidden treasure for yourself? You won't be disappointed.

The Decorated Bricks of Tozeur

Materials and Local Brickworks From Destination-Tunis.fr (“Visite d’un atelier de fabrication de la brique de Tozeur”): Clay source : The clay used for Tozeur bricks is extracted from areas about 7 km outside the city, near the salt lake Chott El Jerid . Mixture : The recipe is simple but precise: roughly two-thirds clay + one-third sand , mixed with water to achieve the right consistency. Fuel : For firing the bricks, craftsmen use palm wood (cuttings and offshoots from local palm groves), which gives the bricks their distinctive warm color. Production steps: Mixing : Clay, sand, and water are combined manually into a dense paste. Molding : Wooden molds (kept damp so the paste doesn’t stick) are filled, smoothed, and carefully removed to create clean blocks. Drying : The raw bricks are sun-dried, often dusted with ash to prevent rapid cracking. Firing : Once dried, the bricks are fired in traditional oven...
